Most people start their day with a cup of hot coffee, or a glass of cold water. Did you know there’s a better beverage to start your day with, though?
Studies show that starting your day with water first is best – and that the temperature matters. In particular, warm water is far better for you – and cold water can actually be bad for you!
Here are some of the best reasons to drink your water warm:
- Better Bowel Movements: Warm water aids digestion, as it helps the bowels relax. One study, from the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility showed a 58% improvement in bowel function and digestion after drinking warm water. Wow!
- Circulation: Warm water enhances blood flow, meaning your cardiac system doesn’t have to work as hard. That offers long-term health benefits!
- Pain Relief: Not only does warm water relax stomach and throat muscles (fighting both sore throats and stomach aches), but those loosened muscles can in turn help alleviate pain, which is often caused by tightness.
- Weight Loss: Improved hydration in general can aid weight loss, but warm water has proven most effective, courtesy a study conducted by the Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine – after eight weeks, researchers found that participants had experienced a decrease in body weight, their body mass index, and their overall appetite.
And, as previously noted, cold water can actually do damage.
Your body has to warm that water back up in order to make use of it, and that has consequences.

- Blood vessels constrict, reducing how well they can absorb and hydrate.
- Excess mucus develops courtesy cold water – and if this causes congested lungs, makes you more susceptible to infection and respiratory disease.
- Fats solidify in the presence of cold water, meaning they’re harder to digest.
